Despite hundreds of Vocaloid songs uploaded to ニコニコ動画 "Nico Nico Douga" and YouTube since the software's release, there are a few songs that have become more popular than others. These songs are often image songs for the character who sings them and later on are re-done by other Producers or sung/parodied by other characters (or other would-be online singers, especially on Nico Nico Douga, under the video category 歌ってみた "Utatte Mita").

The following is by no means a definite list. All external links are directed to their original uploads and MyLists on Nico Nico Douga. The songs listed per Vocaloid, and in date order (seperated by Producers).

[edit] Hatsune Miku

Being the first and most prominent in the Character Vocal Series, Miku has many notable songs.

Producer: Otomania(ZenjitsuyoyakuP)
Released 2007.09.04

In the spring of 2006, an internet meme started, featuring Orihime Inoue from the anime Bleach spinning a leek to a looped excerpt from Ievan Polkka, a traditional Finnish folk song. To promote the CV software, a video was made with Miku performing a remixed version of the song accompanied by a video of a super-deformed Miku (introducing the concept of Hachune Miku) waving a leek.

Romaji Title: "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru"
English Title:
Producer: ika
Artist:
Released 2007.09.20

In essence, this is Miku's character song, introducing her to the world. One of the earliest songs made, it was #1 in the initial Weekly Vocaloid Ranking and has remained on the charts ever since. As of September 2008, the original video has had over five million views on NND, with spin-offs that include an animated video, an acoustic version, and several remakes by the other Vocaloids.

Romaji Title: "Hajimete no Oto"
English Title: "First Tone"
Producer: Malo
Released 2007.10.14

One of the earlier Miku works, this song has an unbelievable quality at the time it was first posted. It touched a lot of people who listened to it, with Miku singing her "first sounds." An a cappella version of this song is used in Good Smile Company's 2009 Kagamine Rin/Len figure CM. Thi song was also used for one of the first 3D videos of Miku.

SAIHATE's eye-catch, made by adamaurow
Romaji Title: "Saihate"
English Title:
Producer: Kobayashi Onyx
Artist:
Released 2008.01.16

"Saihate" is a farewell song, or a requiem for those who have passed away. Its uniqueness comes from the fact that it's ironically upbeat and sounds almost cheerful. It has also been subjected to several remakes, including one made by kz (livetune).

Romaji Title: "Sakura no Ame"
English Title:
Producer: halyosy
Artist:
Released 2008.02.23

In late February 2008, halyosy produced this song concerning the thoughts and emotions surrounding graduation. It became popular and was a recurring song in the Weekly Vocaloid Ranking, but eventually died out. In March 2009, halyosy's band "absorb" performed it live for a high school graduation. The original video became popular once more, getting its #1 spot in the weekly ranking, and the song itself was used throughout Japanese high schools as their graduation song.

Romaji Title: "Musunde Hiraite Rasetsu to Mukuro"
English Title:
Producer: Hachi
Artist:
Released 2009.07.06
MELT PV's famous eye-catch, made by Miwa Shirow

[edit] ryo(supercell)'s works

English Title: "MELT"
Artist:
Released 2007.12.07

ryo's first and most successful song that has been consistently charted in the Weekly Vocaloid Ranking. It has also spawned dozens of remakes from the likes of halyosy, Gazelle, and U.SAKURA as well as a 3M Mix and a PV with animations done by GONZO.

Romaji Title: "Koi wa Sensou"
English Title: "Love is War"
Artist: Miwa Shirow
Released 2008.02.22

After his success with the song Melt, ryo gained manga-ka Miwa Shirow's support for his next song. After he announced that his next song would feature a famous manga-ka's art for the PV, other producers and artists decided to create a collaborative song together that would compete with ryo's song in popularity. This began the 2/22 war, as the two songs would be uploaded on February the 22nd. Koisen was markedly more popular than its opponent, スイミー "Swimmy."

English Title: "World is Mine"
Artist: redjuice
Released 2008.05.31

A collaborative project with art done by redjuice. Contrary to what the title may suggest, this song actually tells a romantic and humorous story of Miku acting like a princess to tease (or more likely torture) that one poor schmuck who gets to be her boyfriend.

English Title: "BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER"
Artist: huke
Released 2008.06.13

"B★RS" was a collaboration between ryo, who created the music, and artist huke, who created the video and character. The song is about losing something precious, then later gaining hope to move on.

The video appears to feature Miku clad in a black outfit wielding weapons, but it is not. Most people believe that the character, which later gained the name BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER because of the song, is a fanmade version of Miku. She is actually an original character of huke's. ryo had thought she beared a striking resemblance to Miku, and asked huke if he could make a song about her using vocals by Miku. After the song's success, huke revealed other characters that are related to BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER, one of which is Dead Master, who is the arch-nemesis of the main character. An anime OVA is being released based huke's characters in.

Romaji Title: "Hatsune Miku no Bousou"

English Title: "The Dissapearance of Hatsune Miku (LONG VERSION)"
Artist:
Released 2008.04.08

A song noted for its extremely fast singing and sad lyrics, this song demonstrated the usage of Vocaloid to produce songs impossible for a human to sing (without the use of an external synthesizer/voice-editor).

[edit] Kagamine Rin and Len

Romaji Title: "Bucchigiri ni Shite Ageru"
English Title:
Producer: BucchigiriP
Artist:
Released 2008.01.01

A "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru" spoof sung by Rin which solidified the Road Roller as Rin's character item. The music was also altered to the style of fast-paced techno music (similar to those featured in the racing anime "Initial D").

KOKORO's eye-catch
Romaji Title: "KOKORO"
Producer: ToraborutaP
Artist:
Released 2008.03.03

This song was initially performed by Rin, acting as a robot created by a scientist. She is essentially perfect except for one thing--she is missing a kokoro. The term takes several meanings in Japanese, but it is essentially a soul (but the way it is writen in Katakana makes it sound like a foreign or unidentified object). Long after the scientist passes away, Rin begins to quest for a soul herself, researching about her creator and his life's works. Rin becomes so overcome by the scientist's efforts, she sings out her new-found feelings for him, gaining the all-important kokoro. However, this new-found soul is too much for her artificial form and she dies at the end of the song.

A later version, ココロ・キセキ "KOKORO/KISEKI," is Len's side of the story of how he tirelessly searches for a way to give his creation a soul. This obsession leads to his physical ruin, but when he loses hope, his current Rin receives a message from her future self, which is the completed kokoro program discovered at the climax of the original "KOKORO." Finally at ease knowing his creation is complete, Len passes away.

"KOKORO/KISEKI" was specifically designed as a musical compliment to "KOKORO." If the two songs are played simultaneously, they combine to make one full song, completely detailing the tragedy of Rin and Len from both points of view.

Producer: minato(RyuuseiP)
Artist: yunomi
Released 2008.03.06

A song that depicts Len as an unapologetic playboy, flirting with all the other female Vocaloids including his own sister, Rin, which ultimately leads to his own downfall. Its moderate success would then lead minato to produce two other related songs, this time featuring the voice of a broken-hearted Luka.

Romaji Title: "Gekokujou (KAN)"
English Title:
Producer: the469(IchigyouP)
Artist:
Released 2008.04.02

Kagamine Rin and Len voice their opinion on the Vocaloids' line of succession (which directly translates to their popularity on NND) in this funny rap song. They argue that Miku has had enough time in the spotlight and are now on a revolution to overthrow her and claim her position.

Romaji Title: "Roshin Yuukai"
English Title: "Nuclear Reaction" (also commonly known as "MELTDOWN")
Producer:
Artist:
Released 2008.12.20

A huge collaborative project that involves Miwa Shirow (known in the Vocaloid community for his work on ryo's "KoiSen"), it is famous for being able to appear in the Top 3 of the Weekly Vocaloid Ranking for 6 consecutive weeks, trumping all but "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru" (7). Unfortunately, this streak was broken with the arrival of Megurine Luka. The song has since been subjected to a techno remix by baker and rock remix by cosMo. This is currently the most celebrated song done by Rin.

The song is very abstract with its lyrics, with its general theme focused around helplessness and suicide. Rin is portrayed as an adult who keeps dreaming about killing her younger self to rid herself of the many sins she has committed. In the end, she decides to jump into a nuclear reactor, hoping that the world would be better off without her.

As of August 30, 2009, the original video of MELTDOWN has been removed from NND. nagimiso has since replaced it with a new upload, this time with its PV taken from the DVD/retail version. As such, the original link will be kept only for posterity's sake. The new link can be found here.

Romaji Title: "Paradichlorobenzene"
Producer: OwataP
Artist:
Released 2009.09.19

This song is actually the third of the “Benzene” series (in the order of Benzene –> Nitrobenzene –> Paradichlorobenzene). The story behind this song is actually open to everyone’s interpretation, as the lyrics tells that there’s no meaning to the song and the word altogether. OwataP has mentioned on his blog that the lyrics contain hidden messages and meanings in it as there are many clues in the video. One possible interpretation is the song talking about the dark side and the selfishness of man as they become jealous of other people’s works after having their own works insensitively disregarded by others. This in turn makes such people angry as they rage against themselves and others insensitively. This is also the second Len solo song to reach one million views.

[edit] "Aku no" Series

A series of songs by mothy(AkunoP) in a medieval setting, these songs tell a story of a cruel, selfish queen (depicted by Rin) and her servant (depicted by Len). The first song of the series, "Aku no Musume," did not receive much recognition until the second song, "Aku no Meshitsukai," added a complimentary twist to the original plot.

Romaji Title: "Aku no Musume"
English Title: "Daughter of Evil"
Artist:
Released 2008.04.06

The first song is sung of Rin, as the selfish and evil fourteen year old queen, and tells of her reign of terror. When she sees a prince she fancies (KAITO) with a girl from "the green country" (Miku) she becomes extremely jealous and orders the death of the entire country. This is the final straw for her kingdom and they launch a revolt, lead of a red warrior (MEIKO). By the end the queen is captured (without a fight) and executed by guillotine.

Romaji Title: "Aku no Meshitsukai"
English Title: "Servant of Evil"
Artist:
Released 2008.04.29

This song is told by the Rin's servant, played by Len, who we discover is her twin and they were forced into their present roles at a young age. He talks about how much love he has for sister, no matter what she does. He also falls in love with Miku, yet his love for Rin leads him to be the one who kills her when ordered. After the revolt is launched, he tells Rin they must switch clothes so she can escape safely. His plan works and, fooling everyone into thinking he is the queen, he is actually the one who losses his life at the end.

This song has henceforth become Len's most famous song. It was the first Len song to hit over one million views.

English Title: "Regret Message"
Artist:
Released 2008.05.25

Rin's followup song tells of her going to the seaside and places a glass bottle with a paper inside into the ocean. She talks about how she regrets how selfish she was and never appreciated Len's presence while he was alive. The end lyrics revealed the written wish on the paper to be, "If we could be reborn....."

Artist:
Released 2008.12.27

In this song Len finds himself in a dark world after dying, forced to think about his sins. He's hands fastened by red handcuffs and his ankles in blue shackles. He eventually hears a lullaby that contains a message for him (supposedly Rin's bottled wish) and is told that he will be reborn (a "new birthday"), able to finally see Rin again.

This song is officially the third in ~The Clockwork's Lullaby~ series (the first song, the second song, the fourth song), but is also tied to the "Aku no" series.

[edit] MEIKO

Sakine Meiko, made by Daigo86

Relatively obscure before the introduction of Miku, MEIKO's current claim to fame comes from her alter-ego, Sakine Meiko (otherwise known as MEIKO(16)), singing popular J-pop songs.

[edit] yuukiss' works

Famous creator of ぼかんないんです>< "Vocanaindesu><," the manual version of VocaListener. Unfortunately, he does not keep a MyList of the songs he has produced.

Released: 2008.02.09

One of the first few instances of a high-pitched MEIKO, now known as Sakine Meiko, Nostalgic is the most famous song sung solely by Meiko.

Released: 2008.05.07

Originally sung by Hamasaki Ayumi. The most famous example of Vocanaindesu><, after which is followed-up by a Miku version.

[edit] shu-t's works

A producer famous for making trance tracks that mostly feature MEIKO.

Released: 2008.03.01
Artist: i1150
Released: 2008.09.04

[edit] 斜め上/Nanameue's works

Romaji Title: "Delicate ni Sukishite"
English Title: "Love the Delicate"
Artist: Daigo
Released: 2008.04.11

Originally from the maho-shoujo anime "Creamy Mami", sung by Takako Ohta. This song could be said to be the beginning of Sakine Meiko's fame, quickly establishing her as a sort of J-pop idol-turned-"maho-shoujo" or magical girl (which would later be lamp-shaded in her singing the titular キューティーハニー "Cutey Honey" in both her MEIKO and Sakine voices). Trivia - this was also sung by Kimiko Koyama as "Sendo Yukari" in the shonen anime "Rosario+Vampire," and also featured in the anime's albums, "The Capucchu" and "IDOL COVER BEST."

Romaji Title: "Seikan Hikou"
English Title: "Interstellar Flight"
Artist: ---
Released: 2008.07.18

Originally from the mecha anime "Macross Frontier", sung by Nakajima Megumi. Out of all the Vocaloid renditions of this very famous song, it was MEIKO's that stood out and was able to sustain a spot in the Weekly Vocaloid Ranking.

Artist: Daigo
Released: 2008.08.08

Originally sung in Chinese by Cyndi Wang. This song gained popularity when it was featured in a 3DPV entitled, "HONEY - NANAMEUE ALL☆STARS" which also features Sakine Meiko and the rest of the Vocaloids dancing on stage similar to the idol/dating sim game "iDOLM@STER." The "All-Star" version also turned the song into a collaboration between Meiko, Rin and Len (with Miku, KAITO, Haku, Teto, and Neru singing very minor verses), but Meiko is still the leading voice in the entire song.

[edit] KAITO

Urotanda's eye-catch
Romaji Title: "Hikyou Sentai Urotanda"
English Title: "The Dirty and Unmanly Force Urotander"
Producer: ShinP
Artist: ---
Released 2007.11.28

A former mainstay in the Weekly Vocaloid Ranking, Urotanda is tailored after classic, hotblooded shounen songs (those that are usually featured in mecha anime). The main vocals in this song are sung by KAITO, whilst MEIKO and Miku can be heard as backing vocals. The main theme of the song is the usage of underhanded methods to win, as opposed to the typically accepted superhero theme of fighting fairly against enemies. These include backstabbing opponents, running away to recuperate from injuries, and not calling out one's attacks (as it is a typical anime cliché for the hero to shout the name of his special attacks before actually doing them). This juxtaposition has amused a large amount of viewers, and there is a patriotic community surrounding the song. Fuuga Naoto, the man who lent his voice to KAITO, has released a CD of this song.

Romaji Title: "Shima Uta"
English Title: "Island Song"
Producer: ---
Artist: ---
Released: 2008.01.24

An extremely well done cover of a difficult song originally sung by the Japanese band "The Boom."

Romaji Title: "Byakkoya no Musume"
English Title: "Girl in White Tiger Field"
Producer: BucchigiriP
Artist: ---
Released 2008.02.17

Original song is from the film "Paprika," sung by Susumu Hirasawa. Famous for imitating the original song extremely closely, this song uses 10 KAITO tracks and 2 Rins.

English Title: "Cantarella"
Producer: 黒うさP
Artist: ---
Released 2008.02.21
A famous KAITO song with Miku as backing vocals, this is famous for its Miku x KAITO PVs.
Romaji Title: "Sen'nen no Dokusouka"
English Title: "Thousand Year Song Solo"
Producer: yanagiP
Artist:
Released 2008.04.27

The first KAITO original to hit #1 in the Vocaloid Weekly Rankings, this traditional-sounding song is about a Vocaloid whose master has long died, yet the Vocaloid still continues to sing.

Romaji Title: "Shine ba Ii Noni"
English Title: ---
Producer: ---
Artist: ---
Released 2009.01.16

A catchy trance tune with horrible lyrics. The title roughly translates to, "Why don't you just die?"

[edit] Kamui Gakupo

Gakupo's popularity comes from the fact that most artists use his voice to sing absurd, silly, and/or subliminally homosexual songs. One of his quirks on most videos is stripping naked (sometimes along with KAITO), much to the embarrassment, amusement, or sheer abject horror of the other Vocaloids. Most of his more serious and popular songs are duets with other Vocaloids.

English Title: "Dancing☆Samurai"
Producer: KanimisoP
Released: 2008.07.31

A song about an arrogant samurai who attempts to prove to others that he is a good dancer. He also believes that anyone who does not know how to dance well should just die. The song was also popular for its poorly-drawn PV (it was as if it was drawn by a toddler). The creator, KanimisoP, would later go on to win the Gackpoid Contest grand prize for their lesser-known song "Episode.0".

English Title: "Super Turkish March Owata \(^o^)/"
Producer: OwataP
Artist: ---
Released 2008.08.25

This song follows Gakupo through an unlucky series of events all with the intent of meeting Kaito at a certain location, only to find out that he could not come due to something cropping up when Gakupo had finally reached the meeting spot. Gakupo then flies into a rage and slashes his cellphone in half, eventually cries by himself, having nowhere to place his rage upon.

Producer: natsuP
Artist: Haru Aki
Released 2009.07.22

This song was released by natsuP and SCL Project for Nico Nico Douga's Gackpoid Contest and took one of the ten winning spots. natsuP's stated goal was to create a song that sounded like something Gackt himself would produce.

From the yaoi visual novel 鬼畜眼鏡 "Kichiku Megane", composed by "C.G mix."

[edit] Megurine Luka

Producer: minato(RyuuseiP)
Artist: shiina
Released 2009.01.30

A "late-bloomer" song (as it was released only a few hours before the end of Luka's debut day) which ended up proving to be more popular than both of otetsu's Luka songs, and captured the Top-1 spot of the 70th Weekly Vocaloid Ranking on it's first week of release. This is loosely related to Len's "SPICE!" as it depicts Luka as the unfortunate girlfriend of a lecherous two-timer (who is hinted to be Len). She knows what's going on behind her back and keeps quiet about it, but she secretly wishes to rip his throat off and release herself from the pain and suffering, thus explaining the title of the song.

Romaji Title: "Hoshikuzu Utopia"
English Title: "Stardust Utopia"
Producer: otetsu
Artist: meola
Released: 2009.01.30

A surprisingly well-done song that came out the day Luka was released, when there was still no Luka-made "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru" and "Ievan Polkka" spoofs around, it gained a significant amount of popularity. It was later followed-up by "transient future" only after a few hours, but it didn't get quite as famous.

Luka doing the Spinning Double Lariat
English Title: "Double Lariat"
Producer & Artist : agoanikiP
Released 2009.02.05

A somber yet hilarious song that plays on Luka's name ( "Meguri" means "to revolve or go around"). The title is coined from Mike Haggar and Zangief's famous special attack. The lyrics are about how Luka wishes to spin around better, and to extend her reach as far as her friends can go. Initially she spins on the spot, then she moves around, and then she flies in order to reach farther. On the surface, the song is immature and ridiculous, however, the action of spinning is actually a great metaphor used throughout the entire song. The spinning represents one's life ambition, and how, in the beginning one feels overshadowed by those around them who achieve farther and higher. Eventually, when Luka achieves her goal, she looks back upon the world (reaching a 6300km radius and tilted at 23.4 degrees), reflecting on what she has done. Its PV is also unique for making use of Shockwave flash instead of the usual flash video (.flv) format, which makes certain animations continue to play even when the video itself is paused. Because of this, the video contains some special "Easter eggs" for viewers if they pause during certain segments. Recently, an Utatte Mita of the song has been released by Yukari Fukui (voice actress of Nia Teppelin from "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann").

English Title: "Luka Luka★Night Fever"
Producer: SAM(samfree)
Artist: Haru Aki
Released: 2009.02.12

The first in the "Night" series. This Eurobeat song launched a new craze of para para dancing and covers. The dance created by Kozue and the cover by Mitani Nana have over a million views each.

Romaji Title: "TOETO"
Producer & Artist : ToraborutaP
Released 2009.02.17

An adorable song about a shy little girl (played by Luka) wearing a white kitty hat. "Toeto" is an onomatopoeia for audible speechlessness (ie - "Umm... Uh...") which is often associated with very shy characters.

Artwork from "Just Be Friends" by yunomi.
Producer: Dixie Flatline/Yeheyuan Production
Artist: yunomi
Released: 2009.07.04

This song topped the 92nd weekly ranking and is still in the top 30. It tells the story of Luka breaking up with her boyfriend. The lyrics were written with a masculine tone, suggesting that the story is told from the boyfriend's point of view, rather than Luka's. As such, most of its Utatte Mita versions come from male singers like halyosy and donishima (ドニ嶋).

English Title: "PoPiPo"
Producer & Artist: LamazeP
First Version Released 2008.12.11

A quartet of individual songs (done by Miku, Teto, Luka, and Rin, respective of the time they were released) that, when played together, form one whole song (but each song must be played in a certain sequence, making the entire thing a sort of puzzle song). It has also gained a cult-following for its mimetic PV version which has overtaken the original song in terms of number of views.

English Title: "One Room Disco (yks remix)"
Producer: yuukiss
Artist: ---
Released 2009.03.23

Originally sung by Perfume. A yuukiss remix featuring MEIKO, Miku and Luka (performing as a parody of the original group, named "Vofume"). yuukiss did not use Vocanaindesu for this and instead went the opposite: he made their voices sound as robotic as possible by not tweaking and/or refining their tone and pitch. This is an intentional contrast to the original song, where the singers' voices were heavily synthesized to sound robotic.

This video by SCL Project features the debut of their visual kei version of the KAITO/Len/Gakupo trio, which they call VanaN'Ice (a play on "Bananice", which is how the three are usually referred to as a group). The lyrics talk about forbidden love and hint that one of the lovers involved, very likely Len judging by the video, has been murdered. Len wears a dress in VanaN'Ice projects because, according to SCL Project, he's playing the role of the 'girl character' often seen in real visual kei bands.

Featuring Miku, Luka, and KAITO, this song tells the story of three friends, where KAITO and Miku are in a relationship, but Luka is also in love with KAITO. Miku is extremely jealous and after calling Luka one night she discovers she is with KAITO and ends up walking in on the two having an affair. It is implied, but not directly stated, that Miku stabbed KAITO and then herself.

[edit] Non-Vocaloid Originals

These popular videos have PVs featuring one or many of the Vocaloids, but they did not necessarily sing in them.

The Vocaloids doing the Caramelldansen
Originally a PV with a "chibified" Miku perfectly mimicking the Keroro Squad's dance in the 9th ED of the anime. It gained popularity when another PV, this time using 3D nendoroids of the Vocaloid characters, used the same song and dance along with a short verse from "Caramelldansen" (another internet meme) and 男女 "Danjo" (a meme almost exclusive to Nico viewers).
Originally featured as a PV that perfectly parodies the second ED of the maho-shoujo anime "Yes! PreCure 5," some artists then made the Vocaloids sing the song in an Utatte Mita-fashion. This cemented the PV as one of the most viewed Utatte Mita PVs done by Vocaloids.
A more recent PV categozied as a 手書きMAD work (hand-drawn parody), it originally came from BeatmaniaIIDX16 (subtitled as EMPRESS). It features most of the currently popular Vocaloid characters including fan-made ones (namely Haku, Neru and Teto) in a video that perfectly mimics the original's animation.
