The first instalment of a Japanese vocaloid voice package, Meiko was released on November 05, 2004. Her voice is recorded from Japanese singer Haigou MEIKO (拝郷メイコ). Meiko was released on the original Vocaloid engine, and found a small professional fan base in the Japanese DTM community.

As a member of the older generation of Vocaloid, Meiko is commonly referred to as "neesan" or "older sister", an affectionate term for an older female.
